Ayanna Pressley is a policymaker and activist. Ayanna became the first woman to be elected to Congress representing the Commonwealth of Massachusetts when she was elected the seventh Congressional District Representative on Nov. 6, 2018. Ayanna is of the opinion that the voices of those closest to pain will be the ones to influence policy. Ayanna was raised in Chicago by her mother who was a single parent as well as a father that had criminal records. Ayanna's mom Sandra Pressley worked as a tenants rights organizer, and she encouraged her to be a civic-minded person. Ayanna was taught to be aware of how government can assist in uplifting communities as well as families due to the activism of her mother.
